It’s been a hard couple of weeks in the Totel football world, after coming close to the money on a couple of occasions, I was a couple of players short in my last two attempts to win big. It’s a new week though and there are some big matches up and down the country to get stuck into.
Goalkeeper
Asmir Begovic
One of the most difficult decisions of any Totel Football team selection is the goalkeeper, this week is no different and it looks tough to pick who might keep a clean sheet. I’ve opted for Stoke who host Everton, although the visitors look in decent form they aren’t great on the road and Stoke’s miserly defence could produce some much needed points.
Defenders
Patrice Evra
Manchester United aren’t the first team you think of in terms of defensive solidity this season but Sunderland’s trip to Old Trafford could produce a better display. Evra not only averages over five points per game but has also got a couple of goals already this term and hasn’t been booked at all, so he’s a solid inclusion.
Glen Johnson
Liverpool are looking better in recent weeks and Glen Johnson is becoming a consistent fantasy football performer. He brings the potential of assists, the very rare goal (see last week’s win over West Ham) but crucially has only been booked once this season. Apart from their win over Reading, Aston Villa are hardly showing bags of attacking threat so Johnson gets the nod.
Brede Hangeland
The Fulham centre-back was dismissed against Sunderland but is now back in action and I’m still not convinced QPR will pose too much threat to the Cottagers. Hangeland is solid in the air from set pieces and if Fulham are looking to grab a goal at Loftus Road he could play a key part and has plenty of point-scoring potential.
Leighton Baines
The England international has been in a poor run of form, points wise, but a visit to Stoke could very well be a cagey affair and the threat Baines offers from free-kicks and the crosses from the left wing make him look worth including this week.
Midfielders
Marouane Fellaini
My midfield consists of several players who’ve been in great form so far this season. Fellaini fits that bill and although he’s liable for the odd booking, an average score of eight points and a haul of eight Premier League goals already is too good to ignore.
David Silva
David Silva hasn’t reached the heights of last season yet in my opinion, although a game against an injury-hit Newcastle side gives Manchester City the perfect chance to bounce back from their derby defeat last Sunday. Given his creativity and good disciplinary record, Silva could prove a gamble worth taking this week.
Michu
When it comes to goalscoring midfielders, there doesn’t appear to be a better one on current form than Swansea’s Michu. He has had the pundits waxing lyrical about his abilities since joining the Swans in the summer. He’s already hit 12 goals and leads the Premier League scoring charts. I’m banking on him showing those talents against Tottenham this Sunday afternoon.
Kevin Nolan
Although things have been a bit quieter on the goalscoring front for Kevin Nolan, he’s a consistent averaging six points per game this season and, with a clash against West Brom who are beginning to stutter, he could find his goalscoring touch and exceed that average again.
Forwards
Robin van Persie
The Netherlands international keeps scoring so I won’t be dropping him from my team any time soon. Van Persie has 10 Premier League goals and an upcoming game against Sunderland. They look pretty poor at the back and it could mean a big score for the Manchester United frontman so he’s got to be included in this week’s 11.
Luis Suarez
Luis Suarez is back in action against Aston Villa and he too has 10 league goals to his name so far this season. Brendan Rodgers knows Liverpool need to continue to pick up points if they are to have any hope of getting into Europe again and Suarez is going to continue to play a key role in that, so he gets the second striker’s spot.
