The Liverpool goalkeeper wants to put an end to the transfer speculation surrounding him and his international colleague, claiming both are staying with their current clubs
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has played down speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona and believes Victor Valdes will see out his contract at Camp Nou.
The Reds’ shot-stopper has been continuously muted as a potential successor to Valdes, but the 30-year-old has rubbished the claims as just “rumours” and believes both he and his Barca counterpart will remain at their respective clubs this summer.
“He [Valdes] has said that he is not leaving Barcelona and wants to honour his contract and you have to respect that,” Reina told reporters while on international duty with Spain.
“I am under contract with Liverpool. What is being said in the papers is nothing more than rumours.”
Reina is one of three goalkeepers in Vicente del Bosque’s 23-man squad for the upcoming Confederations Cup in Brazil and is eager to be involved in what he hopes is his nation’s first triumph in the competition.
“We’re all really excited,” Reina continued.
“For me, someone who doesn’t live in Spain, I want to add my own grain of sand to help the team bring the trophy back – it’s the only one which we have never won.
“We want to make amends for being knocked out of the 2009 Confederations Cup.”
The Spaniard has spent eight seasons at Anfield after a €7 million move from Villarreal in 2005.
