In a weekend featuring a few drab 0-0 matches, there were predictably not a lot of outstanding performances from strikers, though Jermain Defoe’s double against former club West Ham for Tottenham earns him a place in our Team of the Week.
The Spurs man is joined in attacking roles by other goalscorers Zoltan Gera and Steven Naismith, who put in fine performances for West Brom and Everton respectively.
The real stand-out performance of the weekend came from Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez, who sealed his side’s 3-2 victory against Reading with a last-minute winner, which also capped off a hat-trick for the Spaniard. TOTW welcomes you.
Anderson’s superb cameo for Manchester United earns him a place in the centre of the team alongside Southampton supremo Gaston Ramirez, who scored and assisted his side’s two goals in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.
Some stout defensive performances in Swansea and Liverpool’s 0-0 draw earned spots for goalkeeper Pepe Reina – who brushed off a painful-looking boot to the face – and right-back Glen Johnson.
Aleksander Kolarov earns a place at left-back for his showing in the goalless draw between Manchester City and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
And rounding off the team are two goalscoring centre-backs, cereal-obsessed (look it up) Sean Morrison, who nabbed a goal and kept Arouna Kone quiet, and Norwich City’s Sebastien Bassong, who earned his side a point with a last-minute equaliser at Goodison Park.
