Francesco Guidolin has called Udinese’s campaign in European competitions over the last two seasons ‘a marvellous’ journey.

The Fruilani suffered elimination in the Champions League qualification knockout round for the second time in a row, losing to Braga in August, and find themselves bottom of Group A of the Europa League as they prepare to face Liverpool with nothing to play for.

Nevertheless, Guidolin is adamant that the adventure of playing in Europe was a reward enough for his team.

“We have had a marvellous European journey over the last year and a half, playing in extraordinary stadiums and great stages,” said Guidolin at a press conference.

“In the 20 games we have had satisfactions and disappointments. It is a shame to go out of Europe and personally I feel it shows our limitations.

“But at the same time we go out together with many extraordinarily important clubs. I am proud of the journey and like to think back to the exciting games against Arsenal, Celtic, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

“Naturally I won’t forget out eliminations against AZ, Sporting Braga and the double defeat to Young Boys. It all goes in our scrapbook of a great adventure. It is a pity to go, but in sport and in life that happens.

“Now we have this final game against Liverpool in which we want to play with great pride, dignity and emerge with our heads held high.”
