The former Kop favourite believes the 21-year-old would be the perfect fit at Anfield following speculation linking the playmaker with a move to the Premier League
Liverpool legend Jan Molby says he “would love” to see Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen play for the Anfield club.
Eriksen has reportedly been subject to interest from the Reds, with manager Brendan Rodgers revealing he is keen sign similar players to that of January additions Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.
And with the 21-year-old Dane falling nicely into the parameters set by Liverpool’s owners of buying younger, more versatile players, Molby believes the midfielder would be the perfect fit.
“I’d love to see him at Liverpool, and he is exactly the type of player Liverpool should be looking at, but there will be some serious competition I am sure,” Molby wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.
“He’s a classy player. An old-fashioned No.10 in many ways. He has two great feet, he sees passes and has added goals to his game in recent weeks. He has all of the tools in his locker to be a real top class player.”
One advantage the Reds might have in their pursuit of the Ajax youngster includes their ability to offer more regular first-team football to that of other interested parties, something Molby feels could prove pivotal in negotiations.
“What I would say is that Christian needs to play regularly. Maybe that would count in Liverpool’s favour slightly, that they can offer him, you would think, regular first-team football,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the former Kop favourite insists that, although Ajax is a good place to develop as a youngster, Eriksen will have to move on from the Eredivisie side to further his career.
He added: “Eriksen, at 21, is at the stage now where he needs to take the next step. Ajax is a great club for developing young players, but you can’t stay there too long.”
