Suso to AC Milan ‘almost done’

The young attacker seemed likely to make the move in the summer, but the Italian club have brought the move forward and Adriano Galliani insists it is all but finished

AC Milan have almost completed the signing of Liverpool attacker Suso, according to chief executive Adriano Galliani.

The 21-year-old has struggled for game time with the Premier League side and he looked likely to join to Rossoneri in the summer.

However, the move has been timed forward, with Suso reportedly undergoing a medical at Milan on Sunday without telling Liverpool.

And Galliani said a deal for the Spain youth international was all but done.

“For Suso it is 99.9 per cent done,” he said. “He will arrive in the next few days.”

The CEO was also asked about the likelihood of his side signing Atletico Madrid defender Guilherme Siqueira.

“If the right opportunity presents itself we’ll buy a full-back,” he replied. “Otherwise we will continue with the ones we have.”

Filippo Inzaghi’s men sit eighth in Serie A, five points adrift of third-placed Lazio – who occupy the final Champions League place.

Borini has no regrets over Liverpool stay

The striker turned down offers during the summer, notably a €18 million move to Sunderland, but insists he is determined to prove himself at a Champions League club

Fabio Borini insists he has no regrets over electing to stay at Liverpool and turn down offers of regular football elsewhere.

The striker has seen first-team opportunities limited since arriving in 2012, and spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Sunderland before turning down a permanent move to the Stadium of Light in the summer.

And despite failing to find the net in 13 appearances across all competitions this term, Borini remains determined to prove his worth to Rodgers.

“I’ve never regretted staying here,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Yes, I could have left, but I wanted to stay at Liverpool and I’m glad I did. To be honest, I didn’t expect to play as much as I have done so far.

“With Daniel Sturridge’s injuries, I’ve played more than I expected. I think I’ve done okay. I probably should have scored from the few chances I’ve had, but I’m quite happy with my season so far.

“I won’t be leaving this month either. I started the last game and I don’t see any reason why I would need to change clubs. I see it as all positive for me.”

Explaining his decision to stay, Borini added: “The reason I said no to the clubs who wanted to sign me was that I wanted to play for a top-four club. I wanted to play in the Champions League.

“I don’t think you can blame any player for having that kind of ambition. I took into account my football and also my personal life [Borini is engaged to Liverpool model Erin O’Neill].

“That’s why I decided to stay at Liverpool. I have no regrets. This is what I want. It was never about money. If that was my motivation then I would have left for Dubai. I still believe I can be a success at Liverpool.”

Aston Villa – Liverpool Preview: Fan unrest overshadows Lamberts’ preparations

The home side have struggled for form this season and are the lowest goalscorers in the division heading into their clash with Brendan Rodgers’ men at Villa Park

An under-fire Paul Lambert has implored the Aston Villa faithful to get behind the team when they take on Liverpool at Villa Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

Three unofficial fan websites have announced their intention to stage a protest during the opening eight minutes of the game, as they seek to express their unhappiness at the way the club is being run by chairman Randy Lerner.

Furthermore, a poll in a local newspaper showed that 67 per cent of those who took part no longer wanted Lambert in charge of Villa.

When questioned over the criticism in a press conference on Thursday, Lambert responded: “It’s not great. I’m human, like everybody else, but I’m also big enough and strong enough mentally to handle it.

“But what I don’t want it to do is affect the players. The fans have been great with me up until late, and I guess now they are waiting for something to go wrong.

“All I would say to them is stay behind the side. We need their support when times are tough.”

The reverse fixture in September saw Villa prevail 1-0 thanks to a Gabriel Agbonlahor goal – just one of 11 that Lambert’s side have scored in 21 league matches this season – while a six-game winless run has seen them drop to 13th, just three points above the drop zone.

Lambert will hope the signing of attacking midfielder Carles Gil, who arrived from Valencia on Tuesday, will help to provide a greater threat going forward, although the Spaniard continues to await international clearance and may not be able to feature at the weekend.

Lambert’s opposite number Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, believes Liverpool are beginning to recapture their form of last season.

After their scintillating exploits in 2013-14, this campaign has been a different story, as Rodgers contends without the departed Luis Suarez and the injured Daniel Sturridge.

Rodgers said on Thursday that Sturridge was in “the final stages of rehabilitation” and the manager has been encouraged by a sequence of five wins and two draws in their last seven outings in all competitions.

“We’re starting to return to the flow of our game and that is now getting us positive results,” he told reporters.

“We’re defending strong and creating opportunities. The players are growing in confidence after a difficult period.”

Raheem Sterling is “refreshed and ready to work” after being allowed leave for the 1-0 win at Sunderland last time out, while Glen Johnson (groin) has returned to training.

Steven Gerrard (hamstring) and Joe Allen (knee) trained away from the main group on Thursday and Adam Lallana’s calf problem is being monitored.

For Villa, Ciaran Clark is suspended following his red card in the 1-0 defeat at Leicester City, while Ron Vlaar (knee) and fellow defender Philippe Senderos (calf) are still out.
