Official: AC Milan sign up Suso for summer transfer

The 21-year-old is set to end a five-year stint on Merseyside by linking up with Filippo Inzaghi’s men later this year, although some reports suggest he might leave in January

AC Milan have confirmed that Suso has signed a deal which will see him leave Liverpool at the end of his contract in the summer to join San Siro.

Reports surfaced on Wednesday that the Spaniard had agreed a four-year deal with the Rossoneri and, hours later, it was announced on the club’s official television channel that Suso would link up with Filippo Inzaghi’s squad at the end of 2014-15.

The 21-year-old has spent four and a half years at Anfield after being bought in 2010 and developed in the academy, however he has failed to make a real breakthrough from the bench on Merseyside into the first team.

Suso is expected to undergo a Milan medical in the next few weeks, with his agent having previously suggested that the Italian giants will try to reach an agreement with Liverpool to bring him to Serie A in January instead of waiting until July.

The attacking midfielder has made appearances for Spain at every youth level, which included winning the Under-19 European Championship in 2012, although he is yet to play for the senior international side.

Suso, who has only just returned from a groin injury, has made 21 first-team appearances for Liverpool since making his debut in 2012.

Guardiola doesn’t trust Shaqiri, says Hitzfeld

The Switzerland international is widely expected to leave Bayern Munich in January and his former coach believes the time is right for him to move on

Former Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has urged Xherdan Shaqiri to leave Bayern Munich in the January transfer window as he feels Pep Guardiola’s lack of trust is holding the winger back.

The 23-year-old has been struggling to secure regular first-team action under the former Barcelona coach and has mainly been warming the bench this campaign.

Inter and Liverpool are closely monitoring Shaqiri’s situation at the Allianz Arena side, with the former believed to be sitting in pole position to lure him away from Bayern, and Hitzfeld believes the time is right for the attacker to move on.

“The time has come where it is best for Xherdan to leave the club. He needs a new challenge. It is important for him now to make the next step in his development and be a starter on a regular basis,” Hitzfeld was quoted as saying by Blick.

“We saw in the past six months or so that Guardiola did not trust him for the full 100 per cent, even when Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were injured. It was not easy for him that he still did not feature from the start then.

“Xherdan has also benefited from Guardiola’s arrival, but it was clear that the coach never really fully supported him.”

Shaqiri has made nine Bundesliga appearances so far this term, scoring once in the process.

Skrtel targets FA Cup win for departing Gerrard

The Liverpool legend surprised his Slovakian team-mate with his announcement of a move to MLS and the defender hopes to repay him with a trophy

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is determined to help captain Steven Gerrard to lift the FA Cup in his last season as a Reds player.

Gerrard announced on Friday that he would leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign and subsequently revealed the United States to be his destination.

The announcement took many in the sport by surprise, including team-mate Skrtel, who believes that the 34-year-old will leave a huge void.

“I found out when I read the newspapers,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I was shocked, to be honest.

“He’s been here for such a long time and, when he’s not here after this season, it’s going to be different. It won’t be the same.

“It will be difficult without him. He’s the leader on the pitch. He’s a great player and a nice guy as well. We will miss him both on and off the pitch. It will be really difficult to replace him.

“He has made his decision and we have to respect it. It’s up to him and his family. He knows what is best for them. We wish him all the best in the next stage of his career.”

Gerrard scored both Liverpool goals in a 2-1 FA Cup third-round win at AFC Wimbledon on Monday. The final of this year’s cup is due to take place on the midfielder’s 35th birthday and Skrtel hopes that Liverpool can go all the way for their departing skipper.

“Stevie showed [on Monday] how important he is for us,” he added. “He showed his quality with two great goals and proved what a great player he still is.

“It would be nice if we can win the FA Cup. We want Stevie to finish this career here with another trophy. There is a long way to go in the competition but we will try our best.”
