Moyes tells Gerrard: Phone me if you want to play in Spain

The Scot has invited the Liverpool midfielder to join him in San Sebastian, while Southampton manager Ronald Koeman would also be interested in signing the Reds captain

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has opened the door to Steven Gerrard joining him at Real Sociedad in 2015.

The Scot endured a nightmare reign in charge of the Red Devils during the 2013-14 campaign but has since been given the opportunity to return to management with the Primera Division side.

And Moyes has now suggested that Gerrard, who announced his decision to leave Liverpool when his contract expires in the summer, is welcome to join him in Spain.

The 51-year-old told reporters: “He has had a great career for his club and for England and he will be very difficult to replace. If he ever wanted to come to play in Spain, he knows he can phone me.”

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, meanwhile, has also thrown his hat in the ring and says that there would always be a place available for Gerrard if he wanted to join the Saints, though the ex-England international has indicated that he would rather not line up against the Reds next season.

He told reporters: “It is maybe a little bit strange to see Steven Gerrard out of the club Liverpool and, if he likes to continue, he can come [here].

“I am serious – if he likes to continue football in England, he can come. For Steven Gerrard, you have always a position for him.

“He is a fantastic football player, really at the top level in the midfield position and the captain of the club, with an impressive football career.”

Suarez pays tribute to Gerrard: I am proud to have played with a legend like you

The Uruguayan played alongside the ex-England man for three-and-a-half years at Anfield, a spell the Barcelona forward describes as the best of his career

Luis Suarez has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard ahead of the midfielder’s departure from Liverpool, describing himself as proud to have played with a “legend”.

The 34-year-old confirmed on Friday that he will not renew his Reds contract, ending a 25-year association with his boyhood club, and is thought to be interesting a number of Major League Soccer clubs.

Suarez, who played alongside Gerrard for three-and-a-half years, has called his time alongside the ex-England man among the “best” of his career and wrote of his admiration for his achievements.

With you I have lived one of the best moments of my career in a stadium. I am proud to say I played with a legend like you. 1/2

Napoli don’t need Balotelli and Lavezzi – De Laurentiis

The Partenopei president has strongly refuted suggestions that the club will look to bring the Argentine back to the San Paolo along with the misfiring Liverpool striker

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis says his side do not need to sign Ezequiel Lavezzi and Mario Balotelli in the January transfer window.

The Argentine forward did not travel with the rest of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for a training camp in Morocco, with the player’s agent suggesting that a loan to San Paolo could be on the cards.

The Partenopei have also been linked with Liverpool’s out-of-favour Balotelli, who is yet to score a Premier League goal since signing in August, but the Serie A club’s president has refuted the rumours.

“What would be the use in buying them? We’re fully covered in attack, and in a few months we’ll have [Lorenzo] Insigne back too,” De Laurentiis told Il Mattino.

“Let’s not forget that Lavezzi makes €4.5 million a year and, above all else, that he was the one who wanted to leave Napoli in the first place.

“He made that decision in 2011, when we asked him to stay for another year. Then in 2012 he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

“Sometimes the agents of the players amuse themselves by mentioning our names, but we have nothing to do with Lavezzi or Balotelli.”

De Laurentiis is also hopeful that head coach Rafa Benitez will sign a new contract at the club as he aims to bring some continuity to the San Paolo.

“I hope he will stay with us because giving continuity to the club’s technical project represents the best solution. We’ll know everything in a few months from now,” he added.
